The stuff we do matters

Dear pastor,

I have told you before how much you matter to God.

But in this post, I want to mention how the stuff that you do day to day matters.

It is so easy to think that the little things we do daily (like checking email, sending text messages, calling people, making social media posts, reading books and articles) doesn’t really matter that much.

It might even feel like it is a waste of time because we aren’t doing “big” and “important” things.

But I am reminded that the little things that we do day in and day out, week after week, builds a life of consistency and influence.

The things that we regularly do such as reading the Word of God, seeking Him on our knees, sharing small words of encouragement with others or praying with other people, all collectively adds up to a life and ministry that is surrendered to God for His purposes and His glory.

In the short term, it truly can feel like all the little things are kind of meaningless and that unless we have something noticeable then our efforts are not adding up to much.

And yet we remember that God is the One who calls us and equips us. God is the One who started the church, owns the church and builds His church. God is the One whose wisdom and ways are higher than ours. And so we simply surrender our little things to Him. We give to God all the daily stuff: the mundane, the tedious, the small and insignificant. We surrender to God whatever we think or say or do, asking Him and trusting Him to do something with it.

Let us remember how great God is and how amazing His promises! Let us remember His Word that declares to us that we should not “despise” the “day of small things.” (Zech 4:10). Hold steadfastly to the One who is able to do much even with the little things that we offer to Him.
